We all have a person in our life who is an overachiever at work, the master chef at home, or the flexible yogi at the gym. Their facade is put together and accomplished, except they’re not happy, they’re depressed. This form of depression is known as “smiling depression” it can be easily masked, and sometimes patients don’t even realize they’re sad.
This smiling depression can be determined by appearing happy on the outside and keeping the pain on the inside. There is a difference between how a person looks and how they feel. There has been a survey conducted by Women’s Health, in which 89 percent of 2,000 women who reported suffering from depression or anxiety also admitted to keeping their struggles hidden from friends, family, and co-workers.
This disorder shows how a person who shows themselves so happy and has good relationships and friends can keep their inner turmoil hidden. There is a link between perfectionism and depression that is mediated by self-esteem. Research in the past has found that perfectionists are more crucial to depression because they are so self-obsessed of being “perfect” for themselves and their peers, as they often have high or unrealistic expectations for themselves.
The best example of smiling depression is a person who is married and even working, who can smile and even feel happy on the occasions like friend’s wedding or someone birthdays but from inside he/she may feel empty, self-critical and insecure.
These persons are doing pretty well in their life’s and this makes them less prone to seek help as they feel even more insecure or self-critical that they are depressed when they should feel happy or seem to have everything going for them. This depression only leads to further guilt and shame, which contributes to the depression in getting even worse. It’s also dangerous since they function very well in life and none of their confidants recognises they are depressed.
The most common symptom for those who are suffering from smiling depression is that they believe they are not good enough. They pose a poor self-image, emptiness, emotional numbness, self-critical behaviour, high expectations for self-expectations. This all can also be accompanied by the symptoms of depression which are lost or diminished interest from previously enjoyed activities, mind-set related to weight loss or weight gain, sleeping disorder like under sleeping or oversleeping, fatigue, worthless, guilt, difficulty in concentrating and thoughts of death or dying.
It is very difficult for patients of smiling depression to admit that they need a therapist, but it’s urgent to seek therapist when someone is having thoughts of death or committing suicide. In short, if someone is getting weird or unusual thoughts regarding anything then one should see a therapist as soon as possible.

- Learn to replace negative.
- Set reasonable expectations for yourself.
